The Bone Cancer Research Trust has appointed Will Burchell as its new chief executive.

Burchell, who joins from the same role at the Nottinghamshire Deaf Society, succeeds Mat Cottle-Shaw, who has become chief executive at Rotherham Hospice after eight years at the trust, the last almost two as chief executive.

The Bone Cancer Research Trust, which was established in 2006, aims to save lives and improve outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer through research, information, awareness, and support.

Burchell began his career in the third sector more than 20 years ago as a support worker for adults with learning difficulties.

He is a trustee at Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service and has recently completed a master of business administration degree including a dissertation focused on income diversification in the voluntary sector.

Allie Gartland, chair of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, said: “Will’s wealth of expertise in the charity sector and exceptional leadership skills will enable us to continue to develop and grow, alongside driving forward the charity’s strategic direction following the launch of our new 10-year strategy.

“We are looking forward to Will joining #TeamBones and I’m sure our wonderful supporters will join us in welcoming him to the bone cancer community.”

Burchell said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Bone Cancer Research Trust at such an exciting time for the charity.

“The passion, commitment and expertise of staff, trustees, and supporters of #TeamBones is nothing short of inspiring.

“I eagerly anticipate working with you all, as well as the diverse range of individuals and organisations who are equally committed to our shared objectives, in successfully realising the ambitious aims of our 10-year strategy.”

Burchell will take up his new role on 4 September.
