Getting on Board chief to step down

Penny Wilson has announced she is stepping down as chief executive of Getting on Board.

The charity, which supports people from underrepresented backgrounds to become trustees, initially appointed Wilson as its operations director in 2017.

She was promoted to co-chief executive in 2017 and became the sole chief the following year.

Wilson will leave the charity in June, saying she “needs a rest” before deciding her next steps.

Wilson, who has written a regular column for Third Sector, said: “I’ve been at Getting on Board for seven years and we have grown more than tenfold in that time, now training 10,000 trustees and aspiring trustees a year.

“I have absolutely loved working with so many people in the charity sector to support a wider range of people to become, and serve as, effective trustees.

“However, as every small charity chief executive will tell you, the job is joyous but quite full-on and I have decided that I need a rest!

“I’m planning to take the summer off with my family before I decide what I want to do next.”

The charity said Wilson had grown its income from £17,000 to £250,000 a year.

She launched the Trustee Learning Programme, a series of free webinars for and about trustees, and the annual Festival of Trusteeship, which is a gathering of trustees in the UK.

Wilson said: “We are now looking for our next chief executive and I know that we’ll find someone passionate about trustee diversity and effectiveness to lead Getting on Board’s next chapter.
