Animal welfare charity names new chief

The animal welfare charity Mayhew has appointed Sherine Wheeler as its next chief executive.

Wheeler, who has been a consultant and strategic adviser since last year, is the long-term successor to Caroline Yates, who last year moved to become the charity’s head of international projects and relations after 14 years in the top role.

Wheeler is a former director of strategy and performance at Action for Children and before that was strategy director at Marie Curie.

She said: “I feel fortunate to be joining a committed, passionate, and talented team and to be able to work with an experienced and engaged board as we take Mayhew into the next chapter of its long and important history.

“I very much look forward to working closely with staff and volunteers, and alongside our supporters and many colleagues across the animal welfare sector to continue to develop a strong and collaborative voice and to improve the lives of cats and dogs who need us.”

Julianne Hicks, chair of Mayhew, said: “Sherine has the skills and experience and, most importantly, when you meet Sherine you are left in no doubt of her commitment to our cause of improving the lives of the cats and dogs who need us.

“We are thrilled that she has accepted the post and look forward to working together.”

Howard Bridges has been interim chief executive of Mayhew since April last year.

Wheeler will join the 136-year-old charity on 30 August.
