A £1m fund that will support BAME charities and grassroots organisations through the coronavirus pandemic has opened for applications.

The Phoenix Fund will offer up to £20,000 in grant funding to BAME-led organisations with annual incomes of up to £100,000 in England.

The scheme will offer core funding to BAME groups and aims to raise awareness of the challenges facing BAME communities and establish a new partnership to improve and promote community-based organisations.

The fund is being overseen by Global Fund for Children and The National Lottery Community Fund, which has put forward £1.4m for the scheme, including £400,000 for future development.

Figures in May from the Ubele Initiative showed that nine of 10 micro and small BAME organisations were at risk of closing within three months because of the pandemic.

Four rounds of funding will be offered over the next couple of months and applications for the first round must be made by 21 August.
