“20 minutes or so I spoke to Senator Collins and I thanked her for her service to Maine,” Jackson said. “I wished her and her family well.”
“To every Mainer who voted for her or supported her, you can count on me to be your senator now.”
Elsewhere in Maine, Democrats kept the governor’s office blue, as term-limited governor Janet Mills will be replaced by Democrat Hannah Pingree, the Associated Press said when they called the race Tuesday night. She bested Republican candidate Bobby Charles, according to the AP.
Maine only has two congressional districts, both of which are up for election every two years. The state’s First Congressional District is known as a Democratic stronghold, with Hannah Pingree’s mother, Chellie Pingree, expected to retain the seat she’s held since 2009. Its Second District is considered a battleground region, with former state secretary of state Matthew Dunlap, a Democrat, still locked in a tight race against Republican former governor Paul LePage as of publication time.
