Colman: No idea. I can’t remember any of it. The Oscars, it’s like a wedding day. I remember my dad saying, “There’ll be moments, just stop and just look at it. Take it all in. Look at all the faces. Who’s there?” And that was amazing advice. And on my wedding day I remembered it. And it was before phones and things—that magic of theater— when it’s gone, it’s gone. And so that was rather beautiful. But the Oscars was such a head fuck because it’s such a huge occasion. You just sort of can’t believe that’s happened, and you wake up the next day and go, can’t remember any of it.
Scott: I think it’s a testament to you because you come on and you’re just completely yourself and what’s completely yourself is just completely adorable and sincere. That speech is just so incredibly sincere and it’s fun and it’s also ridiculous, but also meaningful.
Colman: It means so much. And that’s why in the buildup when people talk about it, I really understand how it’s, “Please don’t, please don’t” because you can’t help but sort of dream about it. And then it happens and then you wish you’d paid more attention.
What role of each other’s would you have loved to try to take on?
Scott: I don’t want to do anything that you’ve done. I’d just be shitter.
Colman: I want to be in more of the stuff that you’ve done. I want to be in scenes with you.
Scott: Would you do a play? Do you feel you just don’t really want to do a play?
Colman: I think until my youngest [child] has left home, I find going out to work just as everyone’s getting cozy heartbreaking.
Scott: It’s so hard. Or even in the summer when everyone’s like, “Oh, we might go to a beer garden,” you think—
Colman: Cunts!
Scott: I’m going in the dark. I’m going to scream in the dark.
Colman: The camaraderie is extraordinary. I love that. I miss that. I miss rehearsals, but I might not go back to it until I know my kids are all grown.
Is this something that you’d want to see each other do in the future?
Colman: Well, we talk about doing a little thing together about houses.
Scott: We think we should have a reality show about houses and beach walks. We might not have a huge viewership.
Colman: We walk around and we go, “I wouldn’t put that there.” We’d be a bit bitchy going around people’s houses. We thought that’d be fun. Probably no one will see it.
Scott: Nobody would watch that. They’d think, “What awful, horrible people.”
