Hospice consults on restructure amid £1.8m deficit

An end-of-life charity with a £1.8m deficit is proposing a restructure in response to ongoing financial pressures.

Ellenor is based in Kent and provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care for people of all ages.

The hospice announced this week that it was consulting with staff on proposed changes to reduce costs and help secure its future.

Ellenor recorded an income of £8.5m, costs of £10.2m, and had 183 employees in the year to the end of March 2026, according to its latest accounts.

“Although the charity has made progress in reducing its deficit, it is still forecasting a loss this year,” it said.

“Rising costs continue to put pressure on the charity’s finances.

“Ellenor has already taken steps to grow income, improve efficiency and reduce costs, but these measures have not been enough to address the financial pressures it faces.”

The charity said it had already taken steps to reduce costs and was now considering further changes to its structure and some working arrangements.

It has not responded to Third Sector’s questions about the proposed changes, including when asked whether any jobs will be at risk.

“We recognise that these proposals may raise questions and concerns across our community,” the charity said.

“We are committed to keeping everyone informed as the consultation progresses, and no final decisions have been made.”

Jon Quinn, chief executive of Ellenor, said protecting the charity’s future meant making “difficult decisions”.

Quinn said: “We are now consulting staff about proposed changes to help address the financial pressures we face and secure Ellenor’s future, so we can continue providing care for years to come.

“No final decisions have been made, and we are committed to listening to staff and supporting them through this process with care and respect.

“Our commitment to caring for patients and supporting their families remains unchanged.”

Ellenor will continue to explore ways to increase income and reduce costs so that it can manage its financial challenges, the charity said.
