Canadian poet Anne Carson is the winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. Carson was selected “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature,” according to a Nobel Prize Outreach 2026 press release.

If you’re not familiar with Carson or her work, here’s a quick introduction to the genre-defying writer:

  • She translates ancient Greek texts, writes opera libretti, literary criticism, and more
  • Her works include Autobiography of Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse and Red Doc >
  • She’s Canadian-born but is currently “listening to the wind” in Iceland
  • She’s the third Canadian to win the Nobel in Lit, joining Saul Bellow and Alice Munro
  • She started taking boxing lessons after receiving a Parkinson’s diagnosis

In an Icelandic broadcast, she responded to the Nobel news by saying, “Crazy, I think they’re all crazy” (best response ever).
