Online resource shares stories of philanthropy to encourage more giving

A new online resource will collect stories of how philanthropy has changed lives as part of an initiative to encourage more charitable giving.

The Giving Record, which was launched at an event in London last night, aims to host a growing collection of positive stories of how philanthropy strengthens communities and tackles some of the UK’s most difficult social issues.

The initiative is a partnership between the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation; Why Philanthropy Matters, which works to improve understanding of philanthropy; and Greenwood Place, which provides advice to people who want to increase the impact of their giving.

“By showing what philanthropic funding can achieve, The Giving Record aims to provide a powerful and compelling reminder of the tangible impact giving can have on our communities,” a statement from the organisations said.

“More than a collection of stories, The Giving Record is intended to become a national resource for charities, funders and the wider sector, and a call to action to broaden participation in giving and put more private wealth to public good.”

The website includes 20 stories of how a philanthropic donation has helped a charity and organisers are hoping many more will be submitted for inclusion on the site.

Rory Brooks, co-founder of The Giving Record, said: “There is a worrying paradox at the nexus of philanthropic giving and the charitable sector right now in the UK.

“The total amount given by individuals is rising, but it is coming from fewer donors, and that narrowing base is the trend that concerns me most.

“We need more and better philanthropy, and to do this we need to make giving feel easier, more normal and more expected for those with the means to contribute.”

Rhodri Davies, founder and director of Why Philanthropy Matters, said: “The stories we have collected for The Giving Record make it clear that philanthropy is not a mysterious or distant phenomenon, but rather something that is happening in places and communities across the UK every day and making a real difference to all our lives. It is vital that we recognise and celebrate this.”

“At a time when there are many major challenges facing our society, and it can be easy to lose hope, stories like these also act as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together and give their own time, money and effort to make the world a better place.

“Emphasising the role that philanthropy can play in nurturing these hopeful examples is more important than ever.”
