The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is just around the corner now, and you might need to go ahead and clear up some space on your hard drive. The new version of the game is bringing plenty of updates across the board, overhauling the graphics of the 11-year-old game and throwing some gameplay tweaks into the mix.
The Witcher 3 Remastered will arrive on September 29 in the form of an update for existing owners of The Witcher 3, but that doesn’t mean it’s just adding a gigabyte or two of new files. Even if you have the game currently installed, it looks like this download will be a big one.
On X, CD Projekt Red social media director Marcin Momot shared some intel about the file seize of The Witcher 3 Remastered update on each planned platform. On PC, PS4, and Xbox, players can expect to download about 45 GB of content, while Nintendo Switch 2 players will be downloading a 50 GB game that’s separate from the original Switch version.
It’s not yet clear what the final install size for the game will be. On Steam, the Complete Edition of the original game requires 57.26 GB, so the maximum file size for the new version on platforms besides the Switch 2 should have a rough maximum of 100 GB. Hopefully, though, a good portion of the update will replace some original files for a smaller overall file size when all is said and done, and the total file size listed for the Switch 2 version suggests that may be the case.
We’ve come a long way from the 15 GB file size of the first game in The Witcher series, but CDPR has certainly delivered the scope to match the modern file sizes. Hopefully, the Remastered update will be worth the trouble, although some fans may end up preferring the stylization of the original lighting. As the look of The Witcher 3 can vary wildly depending on the time of day and weather, it’s hard to get a good sense of the overall difference until fans can go hands-on with the remaster.
A bigger overhaul is still in store for The Witcher in the future, as The Witcher 4 is making the jump to Unreal Engine 5 and shaking up its visual style. The first game in the series is also set to get a refresh in an upcoming remake, but we haven’t got a look at that one yet.
For now, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is a free update for fans, and the original version will probably remain accessible (on Steam, at least) through old branches of the game. For those who have spent the last decade playing and replaying The Witcher 3, dedicating 50 GB to a download that revamps the game might be a no-brainer.
