The Legend of Zelda movie is coming to bring one of the most popular video game franchises to live-action in a major way, and it will do so with a title secret. Over the past few years, video game adaptations, be they animated or live-action, movies or TV shows, have finally started to gain strength in Hollywood after some prior duds.
Projects like HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout have shown the power video game adaptations have when turned into immersive live-action series. As for Nintendo itself, the company has had two $1 billion hits under its umbrella. Those are the two animated Mario movies led by Chris Pratt: The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Now, the next wave of video game movies and TV shows will include even more major titles and characters fans have spent countless hours with. God of War is coming to Prime Video, Baldur’s Gate is getting an HBO adaptation by The Last of Us‘ Craig Mazin, and The Legend of Zelda will move to the big screen with a live-action movie.
That film will star young actors Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (House of the Dragon) as Link and Bo Bragason (Sterling Point) as Princess Zelda. At the recent Nintendo Direct, The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto shared a tidbit of news, which is that the upcoming live-action movie will not have a subtitle. He then added, “Once you see the film, you’ll see why it doesn’t have a subtitle.” It was that comment that started a few theories about what The Legend of Zelda‘s title could mean, and these are the best for the movie’s true meaning:
Is The Legend Of Zelda Movie Hiding Its Real Title?
The Legend of Zelda movie’s title debate reminds me of a very recent such case in another major franchise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known to play with its titles and subtitles, having once announced Captain America: Civil War as Serpent Society, released several titles for Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha All Along before coming to its final title, and more. In 2025, the debate was centered on why Thunderbolts*‘s title had an asterisk added to it. After the Marvel movie premiered, fans would find out that the team changed names, with the asterisk meaning The New Avengers.
Now, let’s take that kind of thinking to The Legend of Zelda movie. It could be a similar situation to Thunderbolts*‘s, where the real title or subtitle of the live-action adaptation is revealed at the very end of the movie. As such, it would be something that the studio and the film’s creators would consider a potential spoiler/giveaway right now, which is why the title just plainly reads The Legend of Zelda. If that is the case, then viewers would only get to find out what Miyamoto meant on April 30, 2027.
The Legend Of Zelda Movie Will Set Up A Sequel (With A Subtitle)
Another possible explanation is that the movie will simply be called that: The Legend of Zelda. It makes sense, even if not really a fresh choice, as this is the first entry in a possible new live-action movie universe, so laying down the foundation with the name of the franchise tracks. In addition to that, we could be getting a tease of a sequel right at the end of the movie. Think something out of a Marvel movie again, as a post-credits scene sets up an adaptation of a specific entry in the video game franchise.
Fans would easily understand what that movie would be subtitled then. Continuing with the MCU approach, The Legend of Zelda could also end with a message like “Link and Zelda will return in The Legend of Zelda: Subtitle,” with the last bit revealing what is the name of the sequel and instantly making it different from the original. Based on Nintendo’s success on the big screen with Pratt’s Mario movies, which had different titles based on video games, The Legend of Zelda is most likely following suit, but adding subtitles, rather than shifting its name entirely like Mario does.
The Legend Of Zelda Is Adapting Multiple Different Games
It is important to note that The Legend of Zelda might not be taking major cues from just a single game. As Miyamoto said that the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is telling an original story that is inspired by the video game franchise’s 40 years of history, keeping the film’s title to just The Legend of Zelda would certainly be representative of that. After all, why burden the film with a game-related subtitle if you are not going to directly adapt it? Fans of video game franchises are not usually thrilled with adaptations that steer away from the originals.
As such, even if The Legend of Zelda does take more cues from a certain game, if it ends up being mostly an amalgamation of The Legend of Zelda lore with an original story connecting the dots, then it is for the best that the film has no subtitle. Keeping it simple with just The Legend of Zelda is the perfect way of making it instantly speak to fans of the video games, getting that brand recognition that could pique the interest of those who have only heard of the games, and keep the focus on the franchise’s long history.
The Legend Of Zelda Movie Focuses More On Zelda Herself
The Legend of Zelda‘s movie title could also be connected to who will end up being the main character of the movie. As a kid, many of those who got into the franchise might have been initially confused by why a game called The Legend of Zelda made you play as Link, not the title character. While Link was the playable character, much of the games’ lore and story were centered on Princess Zelda. This has got me thinking about what Nintendo already pulled off with its two animated Mario movies.
In those, Princess Peach plays a much bigger, and more active, role than she does in the Mario games. Miyamoto’s tease suggests there could be a mysterious twist to the upcoming movie’s title, and making Bragason’s Princess Zelda the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie’s main character would be in line with that. It would certainly be a great way to keep the franchise fresh and add a new layer to the movie beyond just being a live-action take on a universe and characters millions already love. A surprise retitle at the end as Echoes of Wisdom would fit with that and be a shocker.
The Zelda Movie Is Telling The Original Story That Became The “Legend”
Finally, The Legend of Zelda‘s movie title might be just that, with no subtitles or a possible retitle, because the title itself defines what the movie is all about. This would mean that the adventure that Ainsworth’s Link and Bragason’s Princess Zelda go on in the 2027 movie would be known as the legend of Zelda, establishing their roles in this new live-action universe and a story that will be told for generations to come, while also fitting in with the name of the franchise.
Other movies could then be free to add subtitles, as they would be based on the legend developed in the first film. This would fit Miyamoto’s tease by adding even deeper meaning to the title of the video game franchise. That said, while there are all of these possibilities related to the mystery of the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie title, the answer to that should only be provided when the film debuts in theaters next year.
