There are plenty of upcoming LGBTQ+ movies headed our way, and one that I’ve had my eye on features real-life married couple Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer. The Wrong Girls, which hits the 2026 movie calendar on August 14, stars Stewart and Alia Shawkat as pothead besties who stumble upon a briefcase of psychedelics that gives them telepathy with their cats. Sounds like a good time to me, but what are the reviews saying about Meyer’s directorial debut?
A stoner comedy feels fitting for Dylan Meyer and Kristen Stewart, who tied the knot on April 20 at a Mexican restaurant. It’s also got a strong supporting cast that includes Seth Rogen, LaKeith Stanfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Zack Fox and Tony Hale are also in the cast. Katie Walsh of Variety says this stoner duo puts Cheech and Chong to shame in what seems destined to be a late-night cult hit. Her review of The Wrong Girls reads:
It may be loosey-goosey, but Meyer’s film is far from a bad trip. The ensemble cast is especially charming, and the good humor oozing out of the entire project means it’s hard to avoid a contact high. Stewart and Shawkat have a fun and amiable vibe together, even if their characters aren’t immediately in focus.
Angie Han of THR calls The Wrong Girls “a loving ode to the power of friendship and THC,” and says this “sweetly stupid” comedy is best enjoyed with your own ride-or-die bestie by your side. Han writes:

Shawkat and Stewart are both effortlessly charming, and it’s particularly fun to see Stewart cut loose in an honest-to-god comedy. They share the lived-in chemistry of two people so in sync they’re practically speaking their own private language — and that’s before they ingest the chemical that might give them psychic powers for real. The Wrong Girls is slight in everything from its runtime (100 minutes) to its emotions (mostly chill), but Meyer packs their connection with enough backstory and texture to give it real heft.
Glenn Garner of Deadline says this flick has all the hallmarks of a good caper, including mistaken identities, government spies and, of course, mind-altering drugs. Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat’s real-life friendship (they appeared together in 2010’s The Runaways) gives their camaraderie an organic feel. The critic is left wanting more, writing:
Given the stoner comedy genre’s unfortunate lack of female representation, The Wrong Girls is a breath of dank kush, perfect to watch after hot-boxing with your bestie in The Grove parking garage. With a trio like Stewart, Shawkat and Meyer in charge of this potential franchise, let’s hope a sequel isn’t just a pipe dream.
Chris Evangelista of SlashFilm rates it 6.5 out of 10, saying it’s a good time even if you’re sober (though ingesting a substance or two might bump it up to a full-blown masterpiece). Dylan Meyer doesn’t exactly do anything new to the stoner comedy formula, but probably because she doesn’t have to. The critic says:
Writer-director Meyer and Stewart and Shawkat do a great job establishing the overall vibe of the film from the jump, creating a laid-back, low-effort energy that feels downright cozy. Not all of the jokes land, especially in the early portion of the film, but Stewart and Shawkat have such charming chemistry that it makes everything feel as comfortable as a old, food-stained sweatshirt you throw on when you want to lounge around on the couch all day.
With a movie like this, though, you’re not going to please everyone. Liz Declan of ScreenRant gives it just 4 out of 10 stars, writing that no smiles were cracked during the viewing of this movie. The plot and jokes all felt like they could have been pulled from previous stoner movies. In Declan’s words:
For all The Wrong Girls’ efforts to get a laugh out of audiences, it is often painfully unfunny. In fact, if anything, it’s a surprise that this movie is slated for a theatrical release when it feels made for at-home streaming, perhaps playing in the background while viewers aimlessly scroll on their phones. What’s truly a shame is that this marks Dylan Meyer’s feature film directorial debut, and her first time working with her wife, Stewart. Their real-life chemistry apparently didn’t translate into a compelling script or on-set magic.
Overall, The Wrong Girls scored a tepid 61% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. If stoner comedies are your thing, or you want to see what creativity Dylan Meyer and Kristen Stewart’s marriage breeds, you’ll be able to catch this funny flick in theaters starting Friday, August 14.
