The chief executive of MSI Reproductive Choices was awarded a bonus that roughly doubled his pay for the fifth year in a row, new figures show.
The charity’s accounts for 2025 show Simon Cooke was awarded a performance-related bonus of £253,763 on top of his base salary of £254,212.
This brought Cooke’s total remuneration up to a total of £507,975 during the year.
The Charity Commission criticised the charity in 2019, when it was called Marie Stopes International, for failing to properly record discussions that led to Cooke being awarded a £217,000 bonus that doubled his pay package. He has led the charity since 2013.
The charity’s latest accounts say its discretionary bonus scheme provides eligible staff with a one-off lump sum “that reflects the deliverables expected of the organisation and the individual”.
The accounts say: “We’re pleased to confirm that, due to the hard work and commitment of our team members, MSI’s 2025 business objectives were successfully met, and eligible team members received a bonus payment.”
A spokesperson for the charity said: “We generate a significant portion of our revenue from our own private sector operations.
“Executive KPIs are focused on growth and delivery of stringent financial and operational metrics and are difficult to achieve,” the spokesperson said.
“This element of executive compensation is never charged to MSI donors.”
MSI Reproductive Choices recorded a total income of £330.1m during 2025, the accounts show.
This was up from £309.5m the previous year, when the charity recorded a £100m decline in income following a record legacy donation in 2023.
The charity’s 2025 income includes £310.4m from charitable activities; £8.8m from donations and legacies; £8m from investments; and £2.9m from other income sources.
It recorded expenditure of £319.1m in 2025, up from £295m in 2024.
The charity reported £2.3m of employment termination costs during the year, which includes redundancy costs, contractual severance and end-of-contract payments across the 36 countries it operates in.
The charity was unable to establish how many employees left through redundancy globally within Third Sector’s given time frame.
According to its accounts, MSI Reproductive Choices had 9,153 monthly average staff in 2025, compared with 8,724 in 2024.
