Harry Bosch’s Sequel Potential In New Movie Gets Update From Titus Welliver

Titus Welliver assures the intent is still alive to bring Bosch back for a solo outing.

Welliver led Prime Video’s adaptation of Michael Connelly’s crime novels across its first seven seasons, later returning for the sequel series Legacy. Despite the latter show’s success, Prime Video would ultimately bring it to an end after three seasons, with the focus subsequently turning to the Maggie Q-led spinoff Ballard, in which he returned as Bosch, and the upcoming prequel series Start of Watch with Cameron Monaghan taking over the role.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ben Gibbons for 2026’s Italian Global Series, Titus Welliver offered an update on the potential for his return in a solo Bosch project. The star/executive producer confessed that “I don’t have any updates” at the moment on the chances of his return, though assured that “the intent is there” for him to get another outing in which he leads the charge as the iconic Connelly character.

Welliver went on to say that the recent success of Jack Ryan: Ghost War has given some further hope for a Bosch sequel movie in the future, pointing to said film expansion as being the primary goal for him and the rest of his frequent cohorts going forward:

Titus Welliver: I think that would be what we would ultimately want to do, would be a standalone Bosch film. Not to get closure, because to quote Harry Bosch, “Closure is a myth,” but people want more. They want Bosch, they want to see him again, and I think that Ballard doesn’t give them enough sustenance. They want to see the original thing. They want the integrity of what birthed that universe of those other shows. That’s the tried and true original product.

Having released in May 2026, Jack Ryan: Ghost War served as a film continuation of the hit John Krasinski-led series following its initial conclusion with season 4. Though not a critical success, setting a new low for the Tom Clancy franchise on Rotten Tomatoes with a 41% approval rating, it has proven a viewership hit for Prime Video, having held the platform’s No. 1 spot worldwide for two straight weeks while still maintaining a Top 10 position.

In the wake of Bosch: Legacy season 3 being announced as the end of his series, Welliver has frequently affirmed his interest in returning for a solo project for the character. The star/executive producer revealed that there had been plans for Legacy season 4 already in the works prior to the cancellation, albeit kept the exact details under wraps for what the story would have been, and what book or books it might have adapted.

Despite the disappointing cancellation, both Welliver and Bosch have remained in the spotlight over the past couple of years. The star reprised his role in the franchise’s first spinoff series, Ballard, while also recently confirming to ScreenRant he would return for season 2 for three episodes, the same amount he appeared in season 1. MGM+ has also begun production on the prequel spinoff, Start of Watch, exploring Bosch’s early days in the LAPD.

Harry Bosch is a detective with the LAPD. What is his full first name — the one “Harry” is short for?

✓ Correct! Harry Bosch’s full name is Hieronymus Bosch, named by his mother after the famous 15th-century Dutch painter known for his fantastical and nightmarish imagery. It’s an unusual name that reflects his mother’s artistic sensibility.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is Hieronymus. Harry’s mother named him after the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, whose surreal works depicted visions of hell and human folly. It’s a fitting namesake for a detective who spends his career staring into the darkness of human nature.

02

For most of the original Amazon series, Bosch works out of which LAPD division as a homicide detective?

✓ Correct! Bosch works as a homicide detective in the Hollywood Division of the LAPD. The Hollywood Station is his home base, and the show uses real Los Angeles locations extensively, giving the series its distinctive noir atmosphere.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is Hollywood Division. While Bosch occasionally works with Robbery-Homicide (the elite downtown unit), his home base is the Hollywood Division station. The show’s use of real LA locations around Hollywood is a signature element of the series.

03

The series is based on the bestselling novel series by which crime fiction author, a former Los Angeles Times journalist?

✓ Correct! Michael Connelly created Harry Bosch in his 1992 debut novel “The Black Echo.” A former crime reporter for the LA Times, Connelly has written over 20 Bosch novels. He also serves as an executive producer on the TV series, ensuring its authenticity.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is Michael Connelly. While James Ellroy (“L.A. Confidential”) and Dennis Lehane (“Mystic River”) are also legendary crime writers, it’s Connelly who created Bosch. His journalism background gives the novels — and the show — their gritty authenticity.

04

Bosch’s loyal partner through much of the series is Detective Jerry Edgar, played by which actor?

✓ Correct! Jamie Hector plays Jerry Edgar, Bosch’s steadfast partner and one of the few people Harry truly trusts. Hector, best known for playing Marlo Stanfield on “The Wire,” brings a quiet strength to the role that perfectly complements Welliver’s intense Bosch.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is Jamie Hector. Known for his role as Marlo Stanfield on “The Wire,” Hector plays Jerry Edgar across all seven seasons of the original series. Lance Reddick (also a Wire alum) plays Chief Irvin Irving in the show.

05

Harry Bosch is a devoted fan of jazz music, and the show’s soundtrack is steeped in it. Which real-life jazz musician is Bosch’s all-time favorite, frequently heard playing on his turntable?

✓ Correct! Art Pepper is Harry Bosch’s favorite jazz musician, a West Coast jazz alto saxophonist whose troubled life and brilliant artistry mirror Bosch’s own duality. Bosch listens to Pepper’s records at home in his hillside house overlooking the Cahuenga Pass, often while working a case late at night.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is Art Pepper. While Bosch appreciates many jazz artists, his deepest connection is to Art Pepper — a brilliant but self-destructive LA jazz musician. Pepper’s music is practically a character in the show, setting the melancholic, contemplative tone of Bosch’s late-night case reviews.

06

After the original “Bosch” ended its seven-season run on Amazon, Titus Welliver returned in a spinoff series. What is the title of this continuation?

✓ Correct! “Bosch: Legacy” continues the story on Amazon Freevee (later moved to Prime Video), with Bosch now working as a private investigator. His daughter Maddie, played by Madison Lintz, has followed in his footsteps and become an LAPD officer herself, creating a compelling new dynamic.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is “Bosch: Legacy.” The spinoff picks up with Harry Bosch as a PI after leaving the LAPD, while his daughter Maddie begins her own career as a patrol officer. The title reflects both Harry’s legacy as a detective and the legacy he’s passing to his daughter.

07

Harry Bosch’s personal history is deeply traumatic and shapes his obsession with justice. What happened to his mother when he was a child?

✓ Correct! Bosch’s mother, Marjorie Lowe, was a sex worker who was murdered when Harry was 11 years old. Her case went unsolved for decades, and this personal tragedy is the driving force behind Bosch’s relentless pursuit of justice for every victim — especially those society overlooks.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is she was murdered, and the case was never solved. Marjorie Lowe’s unsolved murder haunted Harry throughout his life and directly shaped his philosophy that “everybody counts or nobody counts” — the belief that every victim deserves justice regardless of who they were.

08

Bosch’s modernist stilt house, perched in the hills with sweeping views, is one of the show’s most iconic visual elements. What does his house overlook?

✓ Correct! Bosch’s cantilevered house sits on Woodrow Wilson Drive in the Hollywood Hills, overlooking the Cahuenga Pass with views of the Universal City lights below. The deck scenes — Harry with his jazz, a drink, and the glittering LA basin spread out before him — are some of the show’s most defining images.

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is the Cahuenga Pass and the Universal City lights. Bosch’s stilt house in the Hollywood Hills is practically a character in the show. The sweeping nighttime views of the pass and the city lights below create the perfect backdrop for a detective who never sleeps.

Gold shield detective — or rookie on patrol?

Considering the streamer has many resources dedicated to the expansions of the franchise, it’s understandable that a Bosch movie may take some time to fully come to fruition. Prime Video surely doesn’t want to risk oversaturating the property by developing too many titles at once, nor would they want to risk one outshining the other with too close of a proximity between their respective releases.

Even still, between Welliver’s continued dedication to the series, and Prime Video’s various successes with novel adaptations and the Jack Ryan film expansion, Bosch‘s return does seem like an inevitability, permitted that the spinoffs continue to perform well. Plus, with at least half a dozen of Connelly’s novels centered on the character still yet to be adapted, and plenty of short stories, Welliver has a long roadmap ahead to take the lead once more.
