Help for Heroes’ income up 20 per cent last year

Income at the veterans charity Help for Heroes rose by more than £4m last year, mainly due to a rise in legacies, latest figures show.

The charity recorded an income of £22.8m according to its latest accounts, for the year to the end of September 2025, up from £18.7m in the previous 12 months.

Help for Heroes’ income from donations and legacies also increased, from £15.4m in 2023/24 to £19.8m in 2024/25.

The charity’s legacy income rose from £9.5m in 2023/24 to £12.5m in 2024/25 and Help for Heroes said its legacy pipeline “continues to remain strong”.

The accounts say: “Legacies continue to be our most significant form of income.”

Costs at Help for Heroes increased slightly from £21.3m to £23m while charitable activity costs rose from £11.9m to £14m between 2023/24 and 2024/25.

Help for Heroes said costs increased in “almost all areas of recovery activities”.

The accounts say: “The group’s expenditure on support costs have continued to be carefully controlled.

“We have seen a slight reduction in support costs, from £3.6m to £3.4m.

“Support functions continue to be a vital part of the charity, ensuring we continue to raise funds and deliver against our charitable objects.”

Staff costs at Help for Heroes increased slightly to £13.1m, compared with £12.3m in 2023/24, while the charity’s employee headcount decreased from 288 to 281.

Help for Heroes made an unrealised loss of £1.6m on its investments in 2024/25 compared with an unrealised gain of £5.3m in 2023/24.

“This was another turbulent year for investment with factors including uncertainties around inflation, the war in Ukraine, the impact of the threat of American tariffs and changing interest rates having an impact on the equities market, in which the majority of our investments are held,” the accounts say.

The charity’s income, which has mostly hovered around £18m to £19m in recent years, reached a high of £46.6m in 2010/11. Help for Heroes was founded in 2007.
