The culture secretary is removing herself and her department from the social media platform X because it “favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate”.
Lisa Nandy said the platform was not healthy for democracy and communities and that she would stop using her own account as well as instructing the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to discontinue using the platform.
I’ve decided to leave this platform and my Department will too.
A platform originally designed for free speech and expression now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate.
It isn’t healthy for our democracy or our communities and I don’t want to support it.

The platform was purchased by the billionaire Elon Musk in 2022 and he rebranded it from Twitter to X.
It has faced criticism for giving rise to an increase in hate speech and misinformation since Musk acquired the platform, along with concerns about a lack of content moderation.
Many charities have quit the platform since Musk took it over because of these issues.
Research conducted last year by the content marketing agency Wonderly, a stablemate of Third Sector, indicated almost three in 10 charities had withdrawn from using X over the previous year.
Nandy said she could be followed instead on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
