New boss for gambling charity facing commission scrutiny

Jon Murray has been appointed as chief executive of the Gordon Moody Association following a six-month period as interim managing director.

Murray joined the gambling addiction charity in 2023 as its director of operations before becoming interim managing director in December last year.

His interim appointment followed the departure of Monica Shafaq, who quit the charity in October after making claims of mismanagement and regulatory breaches.

The Charity Commission is assessing concerns about Gordon Moody and Third Sector understands Shafaq has lodged an employment tribunal claim after flagging up practices relating to governance, oversight and compliance during her 18-month tenure.

Murray was previously interim director of care and support at the disability charity Autism at Kingwood between April and November 2023.

Prior to that, he worked for the substance abuse charity With You, formerly Addaction, for 17 years in several senior roles until 2022.

Over the past six months, we have made significant progress in strengthening our services, developing new pathways into support, and positioning the organisation for long-term sustainability and impact,” Murray said.

“I am incredibly proud of our dedicated team and the life-changing work they deliver every day.

“Together, we will continue to expand access to treatment and recovery support, strengthen partnerships, and build integrated pathways that support people affected by gambling-related harm at every stage of their recovery journey.”
