Book review of Spendin’ Time by Gary R. Gray Jr.

So often we focus on the big gestures in life, searching for the most momentous minutes. But Spendin’ Time is all about the simple moments. It is rare that a book comes around with such an unassuming and quiet message that is all joy and no strife.

Author Gary R. Gray, Jr. honors his picture book’s less-is-more message, using minimalist dialogue, narration and onomatopoeia to tell the story of a grandfather-grandson errand day. As the duo take a few detours, their easy conversation sneaks in peeks of Granddad’s memories, their community’s history and Granddad’s wise words for the moment. Every moment provides an opportunity for Granddad to teach his son about kindness and tradition. Every utterance is embedded with happiness, pride and love.

Illustrator Rahele Jomepour Bell’s characters radiate contentment and love with their big smiles and neighborly waves against pastel-and-paint environments that are detailed and rich with life. Homey and cozy, the art of Spendin’ Time pulls you in with intricate drawings tucked into wildly busy scenes. Several unique bird’s-eye perspective scenes build on that sense of close-knit kinship and draw readers into a town we may not know but recognize nonetheless. Jomepour Bell’s clever art is often left to stand alone, its detail and depth echoing and encouraging the story’s message: Slow down. Spend some time.

Gary R. Gray, Jr. wraps up Spendin’ Time with a heartfelt author’s note acknowledging his own grandfather who inspired this story. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a little lump in my throat reading it. This book will remind you of your own cherished memories with a loved one—especially the silly little things that felt like nothing at the time—and encourage you to pass them on. Sweet, calm and nostalgic, Spendin’ Time is the perfect read-aloud for spending some time together.
