Brendan Fraser Will Shape Up For Rick O’Connell In The Mummy 4

Brendan Fraser is fully committing to his return in The Mummy 4 in one key way.

In late 2025, it was first reported that Fraser and Rachel Weisz were in talks for The Mummy 4. Universal sealed the project’s fate by confirming its release date, and the duo finalized their casting, which marks their reunion after 25 years since the latter didn’t return for the third movie. While plot details remain under wraps, Fraser recently shared a few exciting updates about his return as Rick O’Connell after 18 years.

While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Fraser verified that he was returning as the iconic action hero in The Mummy 4, asserting, “Well, we’re going to get the band back together. The only way to do it. So, we’re going to give the audience what they have been bothering all of us for the last 20-whatever years.” When asked if he ever envisioned a franchise return, the Oscar-winning actor “was hopeful for a long while, and then I was like, no, I don’t know if they are… other Mummy movies got made.”

Soon after, Fraser may have hinted at the fourth movie’s potential setting, stating, “what we’re going to do is saddle back, go back to the locations.” Those locations could imply Morocco and the United Kingdom, which are where the first two movies were filmed. It’s unclear if this means the upcoming installment will take place in Egypt since he quickly ended the ramble: “I should probably stop talking like this before I give anything away.”

Although Fraser didn’t spill any more details, he confirmed that he was planning to get into shape as Rick O’Connell, saying, “Please wish me luck. I’m doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape.”

During much of the 1990s and 2000s, Fraser solidified himself as a charming action star after leading adventure movies like The Mummy trilogy, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and George of the Jungle. He was very committed to performing the intense stunts, which even led to the infamous accident on The Mummy set, where he nearly died filming the hanging scene.

It’s well documented that the physical demand induced health problems and injuries for Fraser, resulting in medical treatments like spinal surgery and a knee replacement. In a 2018 profile with GQ, Fraser realized he was “trying too hard” to perform those intense stunts to the point of being “destructive.” As a result, he stepped away from action movies in favor of more dramas that included his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale. His last traditional action project was 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

If The Mummy 4 maintains the action rhythm like the previous three, Fraser didn’t elaborate on whether his training means a return to doing stunt work or that he is setting more boundaries. More of those details may be revealed as the movie gets closer to hitting production.

Alongside Fraser and Weisz, John Hannah will return as Jonathan to complete the trio, while no additional casting has been confirmed beyond that. Radio Silence directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett confirmed that filming is expected to begin in August, as prep should already be underway in May. After its initial 2028 release, Universal fast-tracked The Mummy 4‘s schedule to late 2027.

The Mummy 4 will be released in theaters on October 15, 2027.
