The 30th anniversary celebrations for Pokémon as a franchise were marked this year, with plenty of reasons for fans to be excited about what’s coming down the pipeline over the next year or two. The headline act was undoubtedly the announcement of the first game of Generation 10, Pokémon Winds and Waves, which looks to be a marked departure from anything we have seen so far.
What you might not remember is that we already knew about Winds and Waves long before it was officially announced by developer Game Freak and The Pokémon Company this year. That initial news came as part of the infamous Teraleak, which exposed terabytes of confidential information from the companies concerned.
Interestingly, Winds and Waves wasn’t the only game featured in the leaks, and if this other project turns out to be real as well, it really could be the one we have all been waiting for.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post confirming that the major leaks also featured a multi-region, open-world game that developer Game Freak is actively working on. The overall aim for the landscape they’re creating is for the player to be able to walk all the way from Sinnoh to Hoenn without interruption, which would undoubtedly be a pretty epic prospect if it were to become a reality.
The comments were understandably skeptical at the revelation, with many believing that if the project was ever real, it’s likely no longer, particularly given how big the first game of Gen 10 is set to be.
“While this is extremely cool, I doubt it will happen. Because it’s extremely cool, there ain’t no way TPCI is giving us a multiple-region game for $70. They’re going to make it at least $100 with only 1.5 regions,” one comment read.
“Sounds too good be true. I bet this was just something on the concept board which will be scrapped due to its sheer size,” another added.
“Fantastic! It’s basically something we all have dreamed of. I think it could work to provide an update to the various regions and tie PokeJapan together under perhaps a single League (even if they’ll keep their Champions),” a third said.
Though this game existing is very much up in the air as a concept right now, if Winds and Waves can deliver the goods and be the game we all want it to be, then it might not even really matter. That said, the more, the merrier, so I’ll still be keeping everything crossed that this absolute behemoth does emerge at some point.
