Charity shocked to find its merchandise being sold by major retailer without its consent

The Rescue Hotel, a volunteer-led charity that supports animals at Cardiff Dogs Home, said it was “very disappointed” after discovering a TK Maxx branch in Cardiff was selling its merchandise without its permission and for more than twice the charity’s retail price.

A charity trustee was sent a photo of one of its T-shirts on sale at a TK Maxx branch in Cardiff for £39.99 – 166 per cent more than the £15 the charity charges for them.

The price tag also said it had been reduced from a recommended retail price of £65.

Toria Acreman, chair and co-founder of The Rescue Hotel, told Third Sector the charity was not sure how the shirt ended up for sale in the store.

The voluntary sector needs ‘radical’ change over the next decade, Macmillan Cancer Support chief warns

Speaking at Third Sector’s annual conference in London, Macmillan chief executive Gemma Peters said the voluntary sector was at a “seismic shift moment”, warning that people “hugely underestimate” how much change is coming in the next 10 years, such as mounting pressures in society and widening equity gaps.

Peters said the sector must be “much more radical about how we’re thinking about the shifts that need to happen in society as a whole”, adding that this will take “big, bold thinking”.

She said: “We’re used to, as a sector, telling everyone else how they need to change, like the government, the NHS and donors.

“But fundamentally, as a sector, we need to do things differently too. If we don’t, then we’re going to slowly become less and less relevant.”

Centuries-old grantmaker updates name and launches new strategy

The nearly 400-year-old Henry Smith Foundation, formerly The Henry Smith Charity, said its new name better reflected its role as a charitable foundation and provided greater clarity about its purpose and identity.

Anand Shukla, the charity’s chief executive, told Third Sector it wanted to honour its heritage but also articulate its work more clearly, so The Henry Smith Foundation was a “logical” choice of name.

The updated name and logo come alongside the grantmaker’s new five-year strategy, Elevate Your Impact, which has been launched after the foundation paused to new applications last summer, although it continued to distribute funding during this period.
