Animal charities dominate as legacies league table is revealed

Charity

Cats Protection is the charity most likely to receive a legacy gift from one of its supporters, new research shows.

The Legacy Potential Premier League Table 2022-23, produced by the research company Fastmap and the consultancy Freestyle Marketing, ranks charities by their potential to generate gifts in wills from existing supporters.

Cats Protection replaced last year’s top-ranked charity, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, as the “nation’s favourite”, according to the report.

The league table, which is based on interviews conducted over the past year with more than 5,000 charity supporters over the age of 50, features animal charities in the top five slots, and seven of the top 10.

However, the number of animal charities in the top 10 fell slightly, with Blue Cross falling from number nine last year to 16 in 2022-23.

Three charities in the top 10 work outside the animal sector: Unicef, which last year was outside the top 30, Cancer Research UK, which moved from number 12 last year and Alzheimer’s Research UK, which fell to ninth place from seventh.

Other notable shifts are Woodland Trust and RNIB, which have dropped out of the top 30, replaced by Unicef, St John’s Ambulance and RSPB.

The study also shows a fall in legacy consideration from 40 per cent to 37 per cent, which it attributed to “the threat of global recession and economic uncertainty starting to have an impact”.
