MPs on the House of Commons International Development Committee are to scrutinise racism in the foreign aid sector.

The committee said it would be taking evidence on the subject as part of its wider inquiry into the philosophy and culture of aid.

It will hear from experts on the subject via a virtual evidence session on Tuesday afternoon.

Those appearing before the committee include Degan Ali, executive director of the NGO Adeso, and Lata Narayanaswamy, associate professor, politics of global development, at the University of Leeds.

The committee said it held its first evidence session for the wider inquiry last month. MPs heard that senior managers and decision makers in the aid sector do not often reflect the demographic of those they work with, which is problematic.

Panel members are expected to ask questions about where decision-making power sits in the aid sector and consider issues including the role colonialism has played in shaping the sector.

Other topics could include how stereotypes are sometimes perpetuated in the language and images used by aid agencies.

The session is due to begin at 2:30pm and will be streamed on the parliament website.
