Comic Relief has appointed the chief executive of the disability charity Humanity & Inclusion to its senior leadership team.

Comic Relief said Aleema Shivji would join as executive director of impact and investment in January.

Shivji has spent 15 years at Humanity & Inclusion, which works with disabled and vulnerable people affected by conflicts, disasters and poverty, and has been its UK chief executive for the past eight years.

Comic Relief said Shivji would lead its social change strategy and global philanthropic funding.

It said in a statement that she was a “dynamic leader who is passionate about building a more inclusive, equitable world, with 20 years’ experience in the public sector and in international development including across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean”.

Shivji said: “Comic Relief’s vision of a just world free from poverty strongly aligns with my values.

“As communities cope with the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, I am excited to help shape the future of its funding and ensure there is even greater impact with the vital, outstanding projects it supports.”

The charity has been through a redundancy process affecting 44 roles as it sought to manage the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ruth Davison, interim chief executive of Comic Relief, said: “After a period of change in the summer it is fantastic to warmly welcome Aleema.

“Her strong vision for equality and social change will help us grow from strength to strength as we deliver key strategies and campaigns over the next months.”

Comic Relief also said it had appointed Fiona Campbell, controller of BBC Three, to its board of trustees.
