The Royal Free Charity has appointed the former head of the autism charity Autistica as its new chief executive.

The charity, which raises funds for projects and facilities to support patients and staff at three north London hospitals, said Jon Spiers had taken up the role from today.

Spiers spent five years in the top job at Autistica, before stepping down last month

He won the Rising Chief Executive award at the Third Sector Awards in 2017.

He was previously head of public affairs and campaigning at Cancer Research UK.

Spiers said in a statement: “I’m enormously excited to join the Royal Free Charity today.

“In dark times, the NHS is a beacon of hope. I look forward to making that beacon burn even brighter. Working side-by-side with the trust, the charity will be able to accelerate efforts to improve the wellbeing of the staff and patients we serve.

“In a fast-changing and unpredictable world, we’re here to back the clinical innovations, research breakthroughs and vital staff and services that change lives not only here in north London but across the world.”
