The 2020 Golden Globes Awards were held Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Now in its 77th year, the Golden Globes honor the best in film and television. Ricky Gervais hosted the festivities.
Film was wildly all over the place. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood fared well, though, winning Best Picture – Comedy, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt. Never one to be out-staged, Rocketman hit all the right notes, nabbing both Best Original Song by Elton John and Bernie Taupin in their *gasp* first collective win together and Taron Edgerton for Best Actor.

In terms of shakeups, director Sam Mendes beat out some stiff competition for Best Drama and Best Director with his World War I epic 1917; Laika similarly came out on top with Missing Link; and both actor Joaquin Phoenix and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir danced away with wins for Joker. Well, maybe not Phoenix, whose freewheelin’ acceptance speech was as bizarre as his performance. Christ almighty. Meanwhile, Awkwafina (The Farewell) became the first actress of Asian decent to win Best Actress in a Comedy.

Television was a little more cohesive with Succession, Fleabag, and Chernobyl topping out with two wins each, including Best Drama, Comedy, and Limited Series, respectively. One of the more charming surprises in this field, however, was seeing Ramy Youssef take home Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Hulu’s Ramy. He was just as flabbergasted as everyone else while accepting the award.
It should be noted that despite coming in with an onslaught of nominations, Netflix was more or less shut out with only two wins: Marriage Story’s Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama and The Crown’s Olivia Colman for Best Actress in a Drama series. Their most notable contender, Martin Scorsese’s star-studded crime epic The Irishman, missed every one of their many hits. It is what it is.
