Prepare for a new lore drop: Dark Souls is returning with a new chapter in the adventure on May 20. The Dark Souls franchise is known for its brutal difficulty and environmental storytelling. The lore runs deep throughout the series, waiting in every nook and cranny to be uncovered by a passing Undead adventurer of prophecy.
The game follows a cursed Undead Chosen One on a pilgrimage to reach the legendary First Flame. What they do there is up to the player, and will determine the fate of the entire world. Though FromSoftware has moved on from the Dark Souls series with Elden Ring, the story continues elsewhere.
The fourth installment of Titan Comics’ Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning is arriving on May 20 to continue giving fans their Dark Souls lore fix. The latest issue of the comic is now available for pre-order through Forbidden Planet for £3.30 or from Amazon for $4.99 for a digital copy.
Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning #4 is a beautiful comic book written by George Mann and illustrated by Maan House and Reza Afshar. The series started in 2025 and follows the Knights of Mourning, who head out in search of the soul of the legendary Mother of Lilies.
According to the stories, the Mother of Lilies is a mummified husk whose soul has the power to restore balance to the world. Every member of the Knights of Mourning swears to upkeep the ancient body residing in the depths of the Order’s fortress.
The comic series follows a group of knights on their quest to restore the lost soul of the Mother, and bring the world back to its former glory. Not much is known about the story in the fourth issue yet, except that it will continue the tale of the Knights and their perilous journey through the Dark Souls world. According to earlier reports, the fourth book will bring the series to a close.
Mother of Mourning is a standalone story from the Dark Souls universe, and not a direct retelling of the games. But reviews of the comic series praise it for nailing the atmosphere and mood of the games. The series is in good hands: George Mann, its writer, has worked on many beloved franchises before, including Doctor Who, Star Wars, and Judge Dredd—as well as his own series, Wychwood.
It’s no wonder, then, that the comic books manage to capture the world of Dark Souls in a way that’s true to the games. Keep an eye out for Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning #4, coming out May 20, 2026. And while you wait, you might want to catch up on the previous three chapters of the comic series.
