A Scottish charity that supports single-parent families has become the latest to quit X, citing concerns about the “dissemination of misinformation, declining engagement and platform governance”.
One Parent Families Scotland said it was grateful for the more than 7,000 followers it had gained over the years but invited them to follow the charity on alternative platforms.
The charity supports single-parent families by raising awareness of the issues they face and attempting to influence public policies affecting their quality of life.
Marion Davis, director of policy, communication and strategy at the charity, said the decision was made following internal discussions which found engagement and meaningful professional discourse on the platform had become “increasingly challenging”.
The charity will keep the account live to preserve access to historical content and data, but will not engage with the platform.
“After today, One Parent Families Scotland will stop posting on Twitter/X,” said Davis.
“This is because we have worries about the dissemination of misinformation, declining engagement and platform governance.
“We believe it is vital to foster conversations on social media that align with our values and ethos.
“The rise of misinformation and its impact on democracy, alongside ethical considerations like mental health, have driven our decision to step away from Twitter/X.”
Davis said the charity would continue to work towards its vision of a Scotland where single-parent families were celebrated in all their diversity, were treated fairly and could live free from discrimination and poverty, but would do so on alternative platforms.
The charity said it planned to expand its presence on Bluesky.
