Former Oxfam GB chief to retire

Mark Goldring will retire from his role as chief executive of Asylum Welcome in May after five years leading the organisation.

He took up the role in 2020 after stepping down as chief executive of Oxfam GB following the aid charity’s safeguarding scandal.

Goldring was also CEO of the learning disability charity Mencap between 2008 and 2013, before which he was the chief executive of the international volunteering charity VSO. He was appointed CBE in 2008.

Goldring, who will continue as chair of the South Oxfordshire Housing Association, said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last five years, building on the organisation’s strong local roots.

“We have responded quickly and dynamically to Covid-19, to Afghan and Ukrainian arrivals, to the opening of the asylum hotels, while always continuing our long-standing work supporting all refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants across Oxfordshire.”

He added that after 25 years leading four “very different” organisations – local, national and international – he plans to change pace and retire from long-term executive roles.

Goldring said that although he is retiring from executive leadership, he will continue with mentoring and consultancy work, as well as having more time to volunteer.

Asylum Welcome has started recruitment for a new chief executive.
