Income at the health and wellbeing charity Turning Point has increased by more than £12m according to its latest accounts.
The charity, which supports people affected by substance and alcohol misuse and those with learning difficulties, recorded a total income of £165.3m in its accounts for the year to the end of March 2024, up from £153m in 2022/23.
Turning Point’s income has increased by more than 77 per cent in the past 10 years, the accounts show.
The charity said the operating environment for its 2023/24 financial year has been “challenging” and characterised by “difficult economic conditions”, including high levels of inflation and constraints on public expenditure.
“The financial results for the year show that Turning Point has adapted to the changed operating environment and financial performance remains strong,” the accounts said.
The charity’s reserves also increased, to £5.4m from £3.6m. Its expenditure was £163m in 2023/24, up from £151.4m in 2022/23.
Turning Point utilised money from Public Health England to extend its activities through Universal, Rough Sleepers and Project Adder funding, which totalled £6.9m, the accounts said.
“Last year we also secured funding from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, launched in October 2021, which is enabling Turning Point to support even more people,” the accounts added.
“This initiative has an initial timeframe of three years to March 2025, and in 2023/24 we received income of £8.7m.
“We are using the extra income to reduce caseloads for our employees and increase the number of clients in treatment.”
Staff costs at the charity totalled £126.2m, up from £117.1m in 2022/23. This included an increase in salaries, which rose to £112.5m from £104.5m.
The accounts say Turning Point’s average monthly number of employees rose from 3,721 last year to 3,842 in 2023/24.
