New group aims to promote legacy giving among wealthy people

Remember A Charity has launched a new committee to develop wealth adviser expertise and promote legacy giving among wealthy people.

The Private Client Advisory Committee for Legacy Giving will help to guide Remember A Charity’s work programme with wealth advisers, aiming to equip them with more knowledge and resources to promote legacies among high net worth clients.

The committee brings together influential wealth advisers to “accelerate learning” and develop the knowledge and skills needed for advisors to initiate values-led discussions with clients about legacies

The committee’s launch comes after research from Remember A Charity, Philanthropy Impact and Boon Philanthropy found that wealth advisers lack confidence in having values-based conversations about making gifts in wills.

Committee members will share their expertise and advocate for legacy giving with their clients, within their organisations and across their wider peer groups and networks.

This includes raising the topic of legacy giving with clients and supporting with their legacies, educating colleagues, inspiring their wider networks to discuss legacies with clients and report their learnings back to the committee to help shape Remember A Charity’s development of best practice.

The committee met in person for the first time in September to agree on the group’s terms of reference and explore their key areas of activity. It will continue to meet on a quarterly basis for a year before reviewing next steps.

The group includes Clare Stirzaker, chair of the committee and a private wealth partner at Boodle Hatfield; Sianne Haldane, founder of Boon Philanthropy Consulting and Glenn Baker, director of Charles Stanley.

Stirzaker said: “The aim of this committee is to address how we can better enable our colleagues and peers to raise and discuss this important topic with clients.

“I very much hope that our efforts and collaboration drive changes across the wealth management industry, supporting higher levels of legacy giving whilst also unlocking potential lifetime giving too.”

Lucinda Frostick, director of Remember A Charity, said: “Private client advisers are pivotal when it comes to supporting clients with their philanthropic and financial decision-making. Yet, when it comes to engaging with high net worth individuals about legacy giving, these conversations can be few and far between, and there is opportunity for greater depth.

“Our mission with this work programme is to deepen our understanding of the ways in which wealth advisers can support clients with charitable legacies, and to empower and equip this growing community of influential advisers to unlock and inspire legacy growth across their client base.”
