Movies

While a fairly quiet frame overall, there were some significant milestones this international box office session. To wit: New Line/Warner Bros’ The Nun II topped the $200M mark worldwide and Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan became the highest-grossing Bollywood movie ever in India, overtaking the star’s earlier 2023 movie, Pathaan.

The Nun II scared up another $20.8M in 74 offshore markets during the third frame, elevating the overseas cume to $135M and global to $204.2M. The offshore drop was a great 44% with strong holds in Holland (-14%), Italy (-30%), France (-37%), UK (-38%), Spain (-39%), Australia (-40%), Poland (-42%) and Mexico (-42%).

Germany released this session to a terrific $3.2M on 464 screens and ranked a clear No. 1 with a nearly 50% share of the Top 5 Films. This was good for the highest opening weekend of the Conjuring Universe as well as ahead of all other comps.

The Top 5 markets so far are Mexico ($18.7M), Brazil ($8.7M), Indonesia ($8.7M), Italy ($6.7M) and the UK ($6.4M).

Due ahead are Korea on September 27 and Japan on October 13.

20th Century Studios/Disney’s A Haunting in Venice held to -35% overseas in 52 markets to add $14.7M. The international cume is now $46.2M with $71.6M worldwide. Italy, which is really firing right now, dropped just 3% to maintain the No. 1 spot. The Kenneth Branagh pic was also tops in Spain and the UK.

The Top 5 markets to date are the UK ($6.1M), Italy ($5.4M), China ($5M), France ($3.2M) and Spain ($2.4M).

Expend4bles, or Expendables 4, added $12.3M this weekend, per comScore, following its debut in China last frame. The offshore cume is now an estimated $25.6M for $33.9M global. It has made an estimated $19.3M in China, according to Maoyan. It was No. 2 this session versus local holdover Dust to Dust. We’ll update with other markets when we have more info.

Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan, directed by Atlee Kumar and co-starring Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Dutt, has become the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time in India overtaking SRK’s own Pathaan from earlier this year. The estimated local gross cume, per Deadline sources, is 663 crore ($79.8M). Globally, it’s only the third Bollywood title to surpass 1000 crores, now with an estimated $121.6M, and the second for SRK after Pathaan.

Christopher Nolan and Universal’s Oppenheimer is holding well, adding $6.95M from 83 offshore markets this session. That lifts the international cume to $604.8M for $926M global.

Here’s the Top 5 to date: UK ($73.5M), China ($57.4M), Germany ($48.8M), France ($42M) and Italy ($28.3M).

In IMAX, Oppenheimer has hit $181.2M global.

Also, ahead of wider rollout next weekend, Paramount/Nickelodeon’s Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie padded into just two markets this session, with a tail-wagging $1.3M including paid previews. The result is 57% above the last film in the franchise.
