Museum survives as it hits £85,000 target

The Vagina Museum will be moving into a new home after securing enough funding to stay open.

The charity says that it has raised the £85,000 it needed to avoid being forced to close.

The museum launched an emergency fundraiser two weeks ago saying that it required a “substantial cash injection” in order to stabilise its finances and move into new premises in east London.

It had already raised about £40,000 but warned that without extra funds it would have to shut in June.

The charity hit its fundraising target earlier this week and says it is “excited for what we will achieve in our new home”.

The museum, which employs 10 people, has been homeless since January after losing its lease on a property in Bethnal Green.

Announcing its fundraising success on social media, the charity said: “We are not going to lie, it was really touch-and-go. If we didn’t reach the target we would have had to wind up.

“Instead of that we are going to be reopening our doors to the world in a secure new home.”

The museum has not yet said when it will open to the public on its new site.

The charity had accused Twitter of “censoring” its fundraising campaign after the social media platform put some of its messages behind sensitivity warnings.
