A £1.2m donation from Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, helped his global development charity grow by more than 50 per cent last year.
Sentebale, which supports children in Lesotho and Botswana living with the impact of HIV, raised £4.5m in 2021/22, up from £3.1m the year before.
This includes a donation of $1.5m – about £1.2m – from Prince Harry, financial documents show, which the charity says it used to “rebuild our programmes following Covid-19 and improve the quality and reach of our work”.
Other fundraising events included a dinner with New Zealand rugby legend Dan Carter and an auction attended by singer James Blunt.
Sentebale’s spending also rose, from £3m to £3.6m, and it recorded a surplus of £950,000.
The charity’s free reserves are £900,000, up from £700,000 in 2020/21.
The data is included in the charity’s accounts for the year to the end of August 2022, which were published with Companies House overnight.
The charity first reported Prince Harry’s donation in its 2020/21 accounts.
The accounts acknowledge that the global economic downturn “could affect future international fundraising as donors look to give closer to home”, with inflation hitting the value of Sentebale’s funds, but conclude that fundraising including Prince Harry’s donation “provides a solid financial platform” for the charity in the years ahead.
