Criminal justice campaigner named as charity’s next chief

Criminal justice campaigner Christopher Stacey has been named as the next chief executive of Prisoners Abroad.

He will make the move in May, taking over from Pauline Crowe.

Stacey has been director of support and development at the justice charity Clinks since 2021, and before that worked for 12 years at Unlock, the charity which campaigns on behalf of people with criminal convictions.

Stacey helped lead the campaign against Charity Commission rules expanding the range of convictions that now bar people from senior roles in the voluntary sector.

Crowe is retiring after 20 years as chief executive of Prisoners Abroad, which supports British people detained overseas and their families.

Stacey said: “Prisoners Abroad is a truly unique charity and I am excited to bring my passion for supporting people caught up in the criminal justice system; helping people through some of the most difficult times in their lives and enabling them to face the future with hope, dignity and opportunity.

“I look forward to working alongside the committed and talented team of staff, trustees and volunteers, and working with the charity’s supporters and key stakeholders, to champion the importance of the work that Prisoners Abroad does so that its crucial services are enhanced and strengthened.”
