The pay dispute between Shelter and hundreds of its employees has ended after workers accepted an improved offer of a 7 per cent increase for 2022.
Over 600 members of Unite took strike action last December over pay.
Unite balloted its members in November over what it called an “insulting” 3 per cent offer with a £1,500 one-off cost-of-living payment.
As strike action took place in December, talks were held at the conciliation service Acas, resulting in an improved offer being made by Shelter.
Unite said today that it was for an increase in pay of 7 per cent, plus a one-off payment of £1,250 for each employee. Following a ballot of members, the new offer was accepted.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This was a significant result. Our members were prepared to stand together in unity and by doing so were able to secure a greatly improved pay increase.”
Unite regional officer Peter Storey said: “Full credit must go to Unite’s reps and members without whose commitment and determination this victory would not have been possible.
“Unite has emerged from the dispute far stronger at Shelter and it is determined to ensure that members will continue to receive fair pay awards in the future.”
Shelter has been contacted for comment.
In the lead-up to strike action, Tim Gutteridge, director of finance and strategy enablement at Shelter, said the charity respected “people’s right to strike”.
He added: “We recognise the contribution made by all our colleagues in our shared mission of ending the housing emergency.
“Our ambition remains being able to support colleagues through these challenging economic times, while also being able to deliver our frontline services and campaign work as the housing emergency worsens.”
