Employees have donated more than £1.6bn to charities through the Charities Aid Foundation’s payroll giving service over the past 35 years.
CAF said its service had supported about 40,000 charities since 1987 and worked with donors at 2,000 companies in the UK.
Payroll giving schemes enable employees to make donations from their salaries before income is deducted, reducing costs for the charity that receives the gift.
Charities received about £110m in the most recent financial year through CAF’s Give As You Earn service, the organisation said, made up of £35m in donations and £74m in tax relief.
Neil Heslop, chief executive of CAF, said: “We are proud to be the largest payroll giving agency in the country, which has enabled employees to give meaningfully to causes that they care about for 35 years.
“We know from our research that employees want to work for a business that has a strong social purpose. By matching donations, businesses can put their social purpose into action and contribute more to good causes which are important to the people that work for them.”
Heslop added that payroll giving has also become “a highly effective way to respond to humanitarian emergencies”, with people increasing their donations to help people fleeing Ukraine after the Russian invasion earlier this year.
