Greenpeace UK has appointed joint executive directors to lead the organisation.
Areeba Hamid and Will McCallum will be permanent successors to John Sauven, who retired earlier this year after more than 30 years at Greenpeace.
They will take up their roles in October, replacing interim boss Pat Venditti.
It is the first time the top job at the organisation has been held by two people. A spokesperson confirmed that both Hamid and McCallum will work full-time in the roles on an annual salary of £90,000 each.
In 2020, Friends of the Earth also appointed joint chief executives for the first time, although that was through a job share.
Hamid has been finance programme director at environmental campaign group The Sunrise Project for the past two years and previously worked in various Greenpeace offices around the world.
She is a trustee at the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and will be the first woman and the first person of colour to lead Greenpeace UK.
McCallum has been head of oceans at Greenpeace since 2015 and is the author of the book How to Give Up Plastic. He is a trustee with Kaleidoscope Trust, a charity that campaigns for LGBT rights.
Hamid said the job “feels like the most important role I will ever take on”, while McCallum described Greenpeace UK as “the best organisation I have ever worked for”.
Andrew McParland, chair of trustees at Greenpeace UK, said: “We are really excited to have found such a dream team to lead the organisation.
“Areeba and Will are both smart, brave, dynamic campaigners with a fantastic track record of running campaigns that have made a real difference. They’ll bring their combined experience, skills and energy to one of the most challenging jobs in the environmental sector.
“As the impacts of the climate emergency escalate all around us, we need a new, compelling vision for how Greenpeace UK can achieve the change we so badly need. Areeba and Will have shown they have that vision.”
