Iron Fist Gets the Perfect Revenge for Humiliating Spider-Woman Defeat

Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Spider-Woman #17

After a humiliating defeat, Iron Fist gets the perfect revenge against Spider-Woman as shown in a preview the next issue for Jessica Drew’s ongoing series. Spider-Woman has lately been trying to take down her brother who was recently corrupted by a bizarre mutation that he inflicted upon himself in an effort to save his daughter from a deadly disease. While Spider-Woman above anyone else is initially sympathetic to his efforts as her superhero origin is eerily similar to the situation her niece is in, she also has to be the one to stop her brother after he loses control. Spider-Woman is able to incapacitate her brother, neutralizing the threat, but their fight leaves Drew badly injured, which is how Iron Fist is able to get his revenge.

The reason Iron Fist wants to get revenge on Spider-Woman at all lies in the issue Spider-Woman #7 written by Karla Pacheco with art by Pere Perez and Frank D’Armata. In the issue, all the heroes of the Earth are joining forces against the King in Black as he makes his descent upon the Earth. While Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, Captain Marvel, and Iron Fist among others are fighting the symbiote army, Spider-Woman becomes critical of Captain Marvel as she is deliberately holding back in an effort to conserve energy. Spider-Woman becomes enraged and attacks Captain Marvel, sparking the other heroes to step in, including Iron Fist. Danny Rand and Jessica Drew fight, with Spider-Woman taking Iron Fist down fair and square.

In the preview for Spider-Woman #17 written by Karla Pacheco with art by Pere Perez and Frank D’Armata, Spider-Woman is shown recovering from her fight with her brother, nursing a broken arm that is wrapped in a cast. Other heroes have signed and written on the cast, offering their support and best wishes, including Danny, who is a little more smug than the others. On the cast Iron Fist has written, “I hope it hurt! JK JK (mostly) -Danny” which is a playful jab at Spider-Woman because of the beat down he received by her hand.

While it is not humiliating or disgraceful to be beaten by Spider-Woman in a fight as she is an incredibly skilled fighter with the added benefit of superhero enhancements, it was embarrassing for Iron Fist only because of the way he approaches the fight. In his pursuit of taking Spider-Woman down after she attacks Carol, Iron Fist arrogantly says that he once fought and defeated a dragon, implying that Spider-Woman will be an easy foe to beat. Then, Spider-Woman destroys the hero in a one-on-one match, making him immediately eat his words with a debilitating throat-chop.

The fight between Spider-Woman and Iron Fist has clearly left a lasting mark on Danny as he is still carrying that defeat with him ten issues later, but his note on her cast also carries another connotation. Iron Fist’s message tells fans that the two are back on good terms, with Iron Fist rubbing in the injury just enough to be playful while his signing of the cast at all proves that they are cool. Fans didn’t see any kind of reconciliation after their fight and were left wondering where they stood with each other afterwards. Now, readers know that the two heroes have squashed their beef and are ready to move forward together as fellow heroes of Earth since Iron Fist has gotten the perfect revenge for his humiliating defeat to Spider-Woman.
