The Suicide Squad BTS Video Shows How King Shark Footprints Were Made

Writer/director James Gunn shares a behind-the-scenes video from the set of DC’s The Suicide Squad, showing how King Shark’s footprints were made. As the follow-up to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), The Suicide Squad introduced newcomers Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, and Nanaue ak.a. King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone with stand-in work by Steve Agee) to Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, and Task Force X. Following in the footsteps of Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot, Gunn’s latest anthropomorphic, CGI creation, King Shark has become a fan favorite in the DCEU.

The Suicide Squad’s dimwitted, yet lovable descendant of an ancient shark god spends the beginning of the film struggling with an insatiable hunger for “nom noms.” Cleo Cazo/Ratcatcher 2 teaches King Shark to distinguish friend from food, making him an important member of Task Force X’s group of outcasts in their mission to Corto Maltese. On Tuesday, October 26th, The Suicide Squad and, in turn, Task Force X became available on Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD formats, in addition to digital rentals fully-equipped with a slew of special features.

Gunn recently took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes video of how King Shark’s footprints were made for a deleted scene in The Suicide Squad. The video shows props master Drew Petrotta spacing out the character’s steps in the streets of Panama City, where the film’s Corto Maltese showdown with Starro the Conqueror was filmed. The Suicide Squad’s home edition features commentary by Gunn, a gag reel, alternate trailer, and, of course, deleted/extended scenes. In total, there are eight additional scenes, three of which feature one of Gunn’s favorite characters to write, King Shark. The scenes offer an even greater glimpse into who King Shark is, with one of the scenes seeing him play with two children and another that sees him staring out the window of the bus longing to fit in with the world around him—a scene Gunn had previously said was one he didn’t necessarily want to cut.

There’s no denying the impressive quality of The Suicide Squad’s special effects, of which King Shark himself is a prime example. It remains to be seen if fans will get to see him walk into a future DCEU project helmed by Gunn. Despite John Cena’s Peacemaker seemingly being killed by Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, the film’s credits scene revealed him to be alive in the hospital. He’s now set to work with Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and John Economos (Steve Agee) to “save the f—ing world.”
