Chrissy Teigen Says She’s “Done the Work” and Hopes “People Can Forgive” Her Now

Pop Culture

After a brief Twitter hiatus, embracing sobriety, and taking some time to reflect on her past behavior, Chrissy Teigen is back and grateful for everything that’s happened over the past several months for making her, “a stronger person, a better person.”

The founding member of the “cancel club” sat down with the Today show on Tuesday for the first television interview since her cyberbullying controversy this summer, announcing to host Hoda Kotb, “I’m actually a hundred days sober today and I’m so excited.” She continued, “I feel so good, I feel very clear-headed. I feel like I’ve done the work and I just hope these people can forgive and be able to welcome the fact that hopefully they’ve seen me be better.” Teigen later revealed during a segment on Today with Hoda & Jenna that she’d never gone more than a day or two without alcohol since she first began drinking in her early 20s. “I’ve been struggling with it honestly, for the past couple of years when I knew it was kind of an issue,” she said. “Just even like doing interviews and things like I would think I needed a glass of wine, and then it just started to get embarrassing like at award shows and things and everyone memes it and thinks it’s funny and cute that you fell asleep or something.” She also found her behavior in public while drinking to be increasingly “embarrassing,” especially around her husband, John Legend. Teigen explained, “I just was like, I can’t be the messy one. This is embarrassing, and I don’t want to be waking up in the morning and being like, ‘Oh, what did I say?’ Like that’s so embarrassing and then it was just not worth it.”

The Sports Illustrated cover girl’s decision to give up alcohol altogether came in May after she penned a public apology to Courtney Stodden following the resurfacing of harassing tweets and direct messages she allegedly sent Stodden in 2011 when they were just a teenager. Teigen also issued a second apology in June after more tweets were brought to light, saying that there was “no excuse” for her behavior and that she was “a troll, full stop.” She told Hoda of the whole experience, “I think you learn so much in the moments where you do lose so much, you lose it all, your world is kind of turned upside down. For me, it was a big moment of, ‘Wow, I need to find out how I can be better, how I can grow from this, learn from this.’” Teigen continued, “There’s that old cliché like I’m glad it happened, but truly it made me a stronger person, a better person. Having this period of time to digest it all and to look back and to realize that honestly there’s always so much time to grow and to learn and to become more empathetic.”
