Marcus Missen takes top fundraising job at Leonard Cheshire

Charity

Marcus Missen, director of fundraising and communications at WaterAid, has been appointed executive director of fundraising, marketing and communications at the disability charity Leonard Cheshire.

He succeeds Kate Burt, who left in April last year after three years in post and subsequently became chief executive of the Haemophilia Society.

Leslie Davey has been covering the position on an interim basis for the past year.

Leonard Cheshire said in a statement that Missen, who will take up his new role on 14 June, had been credited with leading the transformation of WaterAid’s brand and fundraising during his nine years at the charity.

Before joining WaterAid, Missen worked at the NSPCC, first as development director then as head of strategy. Prior to that he was director of fundraising and marketing at EveryChild.

He has also held fundraising positions at British Heart Foundation, the Romanian Orphanage Trust and Fight For Sight.

Missen is vice-chair of the NGO umbrella body Bond and chairs the advisory board for The Resource Alliance.

Ruth Owen, chief executive of Leonard Cheshire, said Missen had made a remarkable difference at WaterAid.

“Marcus will have a pivotal role to play in powerfully telling our story, as we drive engagement with new supporters and advocate for change,” she said.

Missen said: “It’s unacceptable that the rights of disabled people have not been prioritised enough by society and Leonard Cheshire’s ambition and passion to change this is exciting.

“We’ll achieve so much more impact through partnerships with others, so moving to an engagement strategy will be an area of focus.”

Leonard Cheshire also said Andrew Ball, director of development at the independent schools group Loughborough Endowed Schools, had been appointed director of fundraising.

Ball has previously held senior roles at charities including the NSPCC and The Stroke Association.
