Suicide Squad Director James Gunn Debunks Taika Waititi Starro Rumor

Movies

The director of The Suicide Squad, James Gunn, has debunked the rumor that Taika Waititi will provide the voice for Starro. Gunn’s soft reboot/sequel of Suicide Squad, which was previously described as “a gritty 1970s war movie,” recently released a brand new trailer. Although it doesn’t provide a great deal of information on the film’s narrative, it does feature the returning and new characters joining Task Force X, some of whom will not make it to the final credits. The Suicide Squad trailer spotlights Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, John Cena’s Peacemaker, Idris Elba’s Bloodshot, and also offers a glimpse at the rumored villain of the film, the alien starfish Starro.

Gunn’s Suicide Squad will see Amanda Waller’s Task Force X on a mission to the island of Corto Maltese. The end of the trailer shows the characters and Amanda Waller’s techies reacting to a giant starfish rising from the ground, essentially revealing the big threat the group will be facing. However, it is not yet known who will provide the voice for the mind-controlling alien. Another big name that will appear in The Suicide Squad is Taika Waititi, but his role still remains a mystery. This has led many to guess Waititi is voicing Starring, but according to the film’s director, that isn’t the case.

Another guess for who Waititi could play was King Shark. The unique character, which is shown to have a lot of comedic moments in the trailer, seemed like a perfect fit for Waititi and his love of portraying colorful characters. However, along with the trailer came the announcement that Sylvester Stallone is the voice of King Shark. In response to Gunn’s reveal of Stallone’s role, a fan tweeted asking: “Is Taika voicing Starro?” Gunn replied with the simple answer of “No.” Unfortunately, the director doesn’t elaborate or hint at who Waititi might be playing. Full tweet can be seen below:

The reply is short and sweet, and with the DC ensemble film not releasing until August, there are likely still big reveals coming in future promotional materials. Also, Gunn is known to keep things close to his chest in regards to his upcoming films, so one shouldn’t be surprised the director is not giving any more hints as to who Waititi will be playing. Depending on the portrayal of Starro, it’s possible the character wouldn’t provide Waititi too much to play with in terms of comedic one-liners, which the director is known for. We now know the director/actor will not be voicing Starro, but judging by the tone and style of the R-rated DC film, it’s clear Waititi will fit in perfectly no matter what character he brings to life.

The trailer doesn’t offer too much of Starro, but that’s almost certainly by design, and there are already hints that Starro may have connections to characters like Peter Capaldi’s The Thinker. The decision to include Starro may play into the story quite well, considering the villain’s mind control ability and invulnerability to man-made weapons. It may also provide more reasons as to why Task Force X is there as opposed to DC’s heroes. Time will tell who the potential voice behind Starro is and what character Waititi has been assigned. But judging by the impressive and entertaining trailer, The Suicide Squad is set to continue the momentum DC has created these past few months.
