Government begins advertising for next Charity Commission chair

The government has begun advertising for the next chair of the Charity Commission, five months after the previous incumbent announced her intention to step down.

Baroness Stowell said in October that she would not seek a second three-year term as chair of the regulator, and left the post at the end of last month.

Ian Karet, a member of the regulator’s board since January 2019, was last month named as the interim chair of the commission while the recruitment process for a permanent successor takes place.

The advertisement, posted last week on the government’s public appointments website, shows that pay and working hours will remain the same as they were for Stowell, requiring two-and-a-half days a week and remunerated at £62,500 a year.

Part of the chair’s job description includes regulating independently, proportionately and impartially, acting in good faith and in the corporate interest, and maintaining and developing strong relationships with government, sector bodies and other major stakeholders and key influencers.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate an understanding of and interest in the charity sector, including an awareness of the multifaceted challenges it faces resulting from changing social and economic circumstances.

Applicants must declare any potential conflicts of interest and any previous engagement in political activity.

The window for applications closes on 9 April, with final interview dates expected to commence in the week beginning 31 May, following an assessment by an appointment panel.

A date for confirmation of the appointment has not been set.

The appointment will be for up to three years.
