Full House: 10 Things About Danny and Vicky’s Relationship That Would Never Fly Today

Movies

ABC’s TGIF was the place to go for a good love story. Some of the block’s sitcoms are still incredibly popular. Certain fans continue to have some big questions for their favorite shows. A burning question reopened by Fuller House is: Was Vicky Larsen the one that got away? The 80s/90s sitcom Full House made it seem that way. Danny and Vicky were like-minded in their work and their love. They gelled for most of their run, and the whole family was in favor of the relationship.

Even the best-loved TV romances have their flaws. If Vicky and Danny got a do-over today, some things would certainly need to change. Here are ten aspects of their relationship that would need to be reshaped for current audiences.

10 Workplace Drama

Some Full House fans might forget that Danny and Vicky’s relationship started when Vicky filled in for Becky on Wake Up, San Francisco. The Vicky-Danny romance is a product of a working relationship.

Now, this might still make for good TV on some dramas, but it might not go over as well to mix business and pleasure on a sitcom these days.

9 Rocky Beginnings

Danny and Vicky’s very first date is a mess. Danny takes Vicky out while he is San Francisco’s Bachelor of the Month. He has been going out with woman after woman, day after day, and gloating about it!

As Danny and Vicky settle in for their dinner together, they learn that Michelle and Teddy have stowed away in the car to tag along and are chowing down on dessert a few tables away.

8 Power Play

Joey Gladstone Danny Tanner and Jesse Katsopolis in Full House

Vicky and Danny definitely have some 90s gender stuff in the mix of their relationship, as do Jesse and Becky. They are both driven, successful individuals, working in the same field.

Aside from work-life balance, this can be tricky because Danny likes to feel like the boss at all times. Vicky gives him a run for his money, but the overall situation might play out differently today.

7 PDA!

Full House is a family show, but it did slip in some adult humor and situations. When Danny and Vicky start to heat things up, they don’t mess around.

They can be seen passionately kissing on the couch, something viewers would expect more from DJ and Steve. For a family show of today, with the exception of Fuller House, this might be a no-no, at least on some networks.

6 Getting Personal

One of the most awkward situations (but best episodes) of Danny and Vicky’s relationship is when Vicky’s mother redecorates Michelle and Stephanie’s bedroom.

Previously, it was a funky 80s pattern of geometric shapes and primary colors. With DJ in her own new fancy room, Stephanie and Michelle get a plush pastel design perfect for doing homework or having a little tea party. Danny freaks out about this at first, which means that maybe the relationship with Vicky shouldn’t have gotten to such a personal level yet?

5 Age is but a Number

Remember how weird Danny gets when he finds out that Vicky is actually older than him? This is a faux pas on both their parts.

Vicky shouldn’t have lied to Danny about her age just to play into some odd expectation at the time, but Danny shouldn’t have expected his girlfriend to be younger than him. This whole thing would not make sense today.

4 Motherly Instincts

The Tanner sisters come a long way from season one to the later years where their dad’s dating is concerned. They quickly love Vicky, and she starts to give them advice and comfort them in tough times.

This might not be such a quick bond in a show of today. Kids whose parents are separated by death or divorce have gone through a lot, and it often takes them some time to warm up to a new person hanging around their home all the time.

3 Cruel Tease

Danny and Vicky’s engagement is quite a to-do. Disney World, fireworks, magic. After all that, they break it off. There’s no guarantee that a turn-out like this couldn’t happen today, but with social media so pervasive, writers sometimes play into the expectations of fans.

In a modern-day world that loves Vicky, she might be stuck with the Tanners for longer.

2 On the Rocks

A House Divided episode of Full House

Danny and Vicky’s break-up is the worst. They’ve had to be apart already for Vicky’s job, and that would only continue if they stayed together. Neither of them should have to sacrifice their dreams, or in Danny’s case, family.

Still, it is easier to have a long-distance relationship a few decades down the road. Today, Danny and Vicky could just Facetime whenever they get lonely. No need to end the whole thing!

1 Redemption Arc

Although Danny and Vicky reunite briefly on Fuller House, there isn’t a second chance at love for them on Full House. Despite their flaws, they do make a sweet couple.

On a show today, a romance might have a few more trips and starts, rather than a clean break. Maybe there’s still hope for them in the show’s universe.
