Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spent the first half of 2020 taking measures to start their new life as they step away from their royal titles. Per People, the couple has formally closed down their charity SussexRoyal. Their new foundation is called Archewell. People reported on June 20 that since Harry, Meghan, and their 1-year-old son, Archie, arrived in Los Angeles earlier this year, they’ve been working on their new charity.

“They have had the opportunity to speak with some incredible thought leaders, and those conversations have been deeply educational and helpful in identifying the work they want to do with Archewell,” a source told People last month. “They are applying all their learnings to the future of the organization.”

In February, royal reporter Omid Scobie wrote that Meghan and Harry would choose a new name for their charity that did not feature the word “Royal.”

“While the Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organization, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal,’ it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organization, when it is announced this Spring, will not be named ‘Sussex Royal Foundation,’ Scobie tweeted in a statement. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘SussexRoyal’ in any territory post Spring 2020.Therefore the trademark applications that were filed as protective measures, acting on advice from and following the same model for The Royal Foundation, have been removed.”

The title of Meghan and Harry’s new organization is connected to Archie, their son’s name.

“Before SussexRoyal came the idea of ‘arche’—the Greek word meaning ‘source of action,’ they wrote in a joint statement in April, via Deadline. “We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters. Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon. We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”
