The recording-breaking fundraiser Captain Tom Moore is to be knighted after raising £32.8m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden.

The centenarian was nominated by the Prime Minister in recognition of his fundraising efforts, which saw him smash the record for the highest amount raised on the fundraising platform JustGiving.

Moore completed 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday last month. He originally hoped to raise £1,000.

Boris Johnson said Moore, who has recently been made an honorary colonel, had provided the country with a “beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus”.

Johnson said: “On behalf of everyone who has been moved by his incredible story, I want to say a huge thank you. He’s a true national treasure.”
