The new Panerai Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT offers a call to adventure. Named for eco-adventurer Mike Horn, Panerai’s latest 50mm Submersible is designed with Horn’s indomitable spirit in mind as well as the recycled drive shaft of his sailing ship, Pangaea.
Setting sail in 2008, the Eco-ship Pangaea was designed to accompany Mike Horn and his crew on a four year expedition to study and address ecological issues from the South Pole to South America. To account for the tremendous operational requirements of the mission, Mike Horn’s Pangaea was packed with state of the art low emission BlueTec engines, combination solar and hydrogen fuel cell power, and an electrolysis system which separates water into its hydrogen and oxygen components so that the resulting hydrogen can be used for fuel. In a sense, the Pangaea was designed much like the 2020 New Panerai Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT, self-sustaining and robust.
Limited to 5 pieces and exclusive to Panerai boutiques, the new Panerai Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT takes its name from the survivalist daredevil himself, offering an adventure experience to the Arctic led by Mike Horn himself. Like the 50mm new Panerai Submersible, the expedition is an opportunity to test the physical limits of both EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT and its new owner while witnessing the dire state of our fragile ecosystem.
In stark contrast, the new Panerai Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT 50mm Mike Horn Edition is anything but fragile. Upcycling reclaimed metal from the Pangaea into a formidable watch of gargantuan proportions, Panerai reduced its potential heft and weight via an innovative, skeletonised titanium movement.
The openworked hand-wound calibre P.2005/T which drives Panerai’s latest 2020 timepiece is equipped with a series of three barrels responsible for a 6-day power reserve and a 30-second tourbillon that rotates along a perpendicular axis. What results is a diver’s watch with the look of the inner workings of a true-to-life submersible.
The first in the collection to be equipped with a tourbillon, the new Panerai Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT Mike Horn Edition is distinguished by a unidirectional rotating bezel with polished indexes on a sandblasted base, “Arctic” blue functional details and an engraved porthole case back. Within its 50 mm case lies hidden protection: a soft iron ring that protects the movement from the negative influence of magnetic fields.
Water-resistant up to 300 meters, the new Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT includes a black rubber strap and a second strap – also in black, with anthracite stitching and a Velcro closure – made of recycled PET material. A special tool to change the straps, a screwdriver for removing the buckle and a display box made of recycled plastic are the final elements of the special edition package.
