Brewery launches hedgehog hideaways in partnership with charity

Charity

A brewery has launched a range of pub-shaped hideaways for hedgehogs as part of its partnership with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society

The Hibernation Arms hideaways, made in partnership with Camden Town Brewery, offer hedgehogs a place to sleep in winter and to give birth to hoglets in summer.

A limited run of 25 will be available, retailing at £50 each, with the proceeds going to the charity.

Hedgehogs are struggling to hibernate, the charity said, because changes in their environments in recent years mean they are being born later in the year and are not able to put on enough weight to allow them to sleep throughout the winter without extra food.

Loss of habitat, dangerous roads and pesticides have all made it harder for hedgehogs to find somewhere to sleep, according to the BHPS.

As part of the partnership, which has raised £10,000 since December, the brewery will donate 20p from the sale of each can of a seasonal version of its Hells lager, called Hells in Hibernation.

Fay Vass, chief executive of the BHPS, said: “Hedgehog populations have declined by half in rural areas and by a third in urban ones in the past 20 years so they need all the help they can get.

“The funds and awareness this collaboration raises will help us help hedgehogs.”

Jasper Cuppaidge, founder of Camden Town Brewery, said the partnership showed how everyone could do their bit for the environment.
