Former CIoF chair one of four new Fundraising Regulator board members

The Fundraising Regulator has appointed four new board members, including a former chair of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising.

The regulator said Paul Amadi, Anne Heal, Nick Jones and Girish Menon had been selected to join the regulator’s board from April.

The new members will replace David Cunningham, chief executive of the global surgery charity Kids Operating Room; Sacha Deshmukh, chief executive of Amnesty International UK; Jill Thompson, chair of Breast Cancer Now; and Jenny Williams, chair of the Fundraising Regulator’s complaints and investigations committee and former chief executive and commissioner of the Gambling Commission.

The Fundraising Regulator said Amadi would bring “substantial expertise in charitable fundraising” to the board, including experience from his current role as executive director of marketing, fundraising and communications at the British Red Cross.

He has also held similar roles at multiple large charities, including MS Society, Diabetes UK, NSPCC and RNIB. Amadi was the chair of the then-Institute of Fundraising between 2007 and 2010.

Menon, who was interim chief executive of Unicef UK between June and September last year, was formerly the chief executive of STiR Education UK between 2021 and 2024. Before that he spent five years as chief executive of ActionAid.

He has also been deputy chief executive of WaterAid and is currently a trustee for Hope and Homes for children.

Heal has held a range of non-executive roles in other regulators including Ofqual, the Office of Rail and Road and the General Dental Council. She also serves on enforcement bodies for the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority.

Jones is executive director of the animal welfare charity Humane Society International UK.

He has been a member of the regulator’s standards committee since 2016, with the regulator saying he would bring a “rich understanding” of its role in regulating charitable fundraising.

Before joining the animal welfare charity in 2022, Jones was the managing director of fundraising, communications and policy action for Action for Children.

He has also been the interim director of marketing, fundraising and communications for Save the Children UK.

All four new board members have been appointed for three years, with the possibility of a further two terms beyond that.

Lord Toby Harris, chair of the Fundraising Regulator, said: “Paul Amadi, Anne Heal, Nick Jones and Girish Menon bring impressive experience that will add diverse perspectives and invaluable insight to our governance.

“These board appointments only serve to enhance our continued commitment to maintaining high standards in charitable fundraising, so the public has confidence and trust in fundraising and the charity sector can prosper.”
